Optional backups are encrypted on your device with a password only you know, then stored wherever you choose.
Because scanning does not need one. Sign-in exists only if you want a cloud copy of your encrypted backup — and even then, the file is encrypted before it is uploaded, so it cannot be read by us or by anyone storing it.
